The dilemma is that you want to do something new, something beautiful, and creative. Something you. Right here in the digital age. One minute you’re afraid this desire might belong to someone else. The next you are pretty sure it’s all yours.
There are moments of being so frightened by how much younger everyone seems than you. How much people a decade or two younger than you have accomplished. How freaking confident they are. How they sell other people ways to fix their lives. How they speak with a confidence that eludes you.
Don’t let this lead you to retreating into a comfort zone. Laughing half-heartedly, masking what your soul tells you you want, referring to yourself as a “hopeless Luddite.” In the whispers of your soul are the very seeds of your brand identity.
You, no matter how much you know it would probably serve you, or maybe just make you happy, have never been comfortable with “tooting your own horn.” Besides not liking the blare, you know the people you want to reach, as you do, recognize the dissonance.
Yet perhaps it’s time to get over the fear of being whispered about and called a show off. Time to stop avoiding your brand identity. Time to stop letting others keep you from it.
People who concern themselves with the harmless behavior of others, label what they do something palatable. But just because they do that, doesn’t mean it’s true.
So you may as well forget them. They won’t stop whispering or thinking their thoughts just because you don’t like it. Besides, there’s a good possibility they exist mostly in your head. People who embrace their heart’s desires often make other people uncomfortable.
In any case, what they evoke in you are a distraction and keep you from getting on with your plans. This is your one sweet, beautiful life and you are supposed to be so much more than you let yourself. And somewhere in this being more, you’ll find your brand identity, that’s been there all along.
Staying invisible has its perks, but mostly not. So my best advice is to get out there, create something dazzling – something you love and believe in, something that is yours.
Trust me: Plenty of room exists in that space between the Kardashians and the Dalai Lhama. Especially for those who are brave enough to be themselves.
You will find out who you are, not just who you are not, and do things, both big and small that shine in the souls of those whom they are meant to shine.
